Matt and Kim on How Bands *Really* Eat When They’re on Tour
It’s Road Trip Week at Bon Appétit! Which means every day, we’ll be sharing stories about food on the long and lonely highway. Or not so lonely if you grew up traveling across the country in a minivan packed with six of your closest brothers, sisters, friends, and Poochie the carsick beagle. So buckle up, and don’t make us turn this car around.
Indie/dance/pop duo (and longtime couple) Matt and Kim, a.k.a. Matt Johnson and Kim Schifino, may sing sunny songs about living on Brooklyn’s Grand Street, but most days of the year, they’re on the road touring. They’re racking up frequent flyer miles and strategically optimizing their in-flight alcohol consumption (they’re Malibu Rum ambassadors, coincidentally), all while releasing five albums and counting. They also know where to go and what to eat when they’re in some of the country’s best food cities. While Kim was preparing for rehearsal (“Kim’s here on speaker but she’s naked so she’s not on the call!” said Matt, followed by a “Hi!” from Kim in the distance), Matt filled us in on what it’s like to eat like a rockstar.
Where are you two currently located?
We’re based in New York, but right now we’re in Tampa, FL, because we’re about to start a tour with Ellie Goulding. Most days, we’re on the road. We’re not just on the bus touring every day, but our American Airlines status is very nice.
What snacks do you usually bring with you on all the plane rides?
Almonds are big for us. There was also this moment where I really thought I’d figured everything out because I would bring little travel bottles of tequila and throw those in a Ziploc container bag through security. That was just a phase though. Why is it that when you’re traveling, …read more
