These Olympian Cheat Day Meals Are as Big as Olympian Dreams
Olympic athletes have crazy diets. It’s a requirement when the reputation of a country is resting squarely on the backs of their perfectly tuned bodies. 16 pack abs and shirt-busting shoulder muscles don’t just show up by wishing them into existence (trust me, I’ve tried). It’s a crazy regimen of nutrition and exercise, kale protein shakes, and crack of dawn 27-mile runs. But amidst all this bodily respect, they’re also human, which means they get that same craving for mozzarella sticks that I get at 11:00 p.m. on a Saturday night. In between all that calorie counting and lean protein intake there’s time in their training regimens for cheat meals. You know, the good stuff.
So what do your favorite Olympians decide to indulge in on their cheat days? We got to talk to them to figure out which foods they crave the most, and well, for starters, pizza. A lot of pizza. Swimmer Ryan Lochte does his pizza with wings, while teammate Connor Dwyer prefers his deep dish. But pizza is just the tip of the the greasy, fried, cheese-and-sugar-covered iceberg. Cheeseburgers for days. Donuts by the dozen. Entire squadrons of chicken wings. Personal cookie cakes. If you cook it, they will come. And come on, these athletes deserve it. Gold medals are great, but they just don’t taste as good as an onion ring dipped in ketchup.
